Places to shop
The nearest large supermarket is Morrisons, in Totnes (also have petrol station)– follow signs to town centre; you may want to break your journey here to pick up the essentials. Otherwise there is a smaller Somerfield supermarket in Kingsbridge (located just after the roundabout and petrol station, on the Plymouth road) and a smaller Spar supermarket located in Kingsbridge high street. Riverford Farm Shop, located midway between the A38 turn off and Dartington, is renown for its organic produce.
There is also the facility of ordering online with Tesco and having it
delivered directly to your cottage.
Most of the local petrol stations stock bread, milk and other essential items. The petrol station in East Charleton (on the Kingsbridge to Torcross road) has a larger than average supermarket, stocking freshly baked bread, fruit, vegetables and most other general provisions. It also stocks fishing gear, as does the Devon Angling Centre in nearby Chillington.
Stokeley Farm Shop, just before Torcross, sells fruit and vegetables, including pick-your-own, and other essential food items.
Once you have found your way around, there are lots of other individual food shops, including traditional butchers, bakers, fishmongers and greengrocers, where you can buy locally grown and prepared foods, as well as organic items. Mangetout and Red Earth Deli are good delicatessens (with excellent cafés) situated at the very top of Kingsbridge’s main street, and the bottom, respectively. The bakery at Frogmore post office makes very good bread. Catch of the Day, in Kingsbridge high street is a good fishmonger. You can also purchase fresh fish daily from the Britannia Fisheries kiosk at Beesands.
Places to Eat
On Fridays, weekends (inc Sunday lunch), bank and school holidays we advise you book for evening meals, ideally book before arriving in Devon. Two popular local inns, regularly featured in the Good Pub Guide, are the Tower Inn, at Slapton (child & dog friendly), very popular, atmospheric old inn, with log fires, candles and lovely walled garden; it has a very tight car park, so unless you are happy to negotiate this, park on the street! The Tradesman’s Arms, in Stokenham, is now both child and dog friendly, and open every day. Food prices vary in range.
The Cricket Inn, under new ownership, at Beesands was serving restaurant style, top end in price range; we now hear that it has reverted back to traditional pub food, at more reasonable prices! The Start Bay Inn, (thatched, child & dog friendly) at Torcross is a very popular, specialising in seafood. It serves traditional food, reasonably priced. Fish & chips there are great, but other fish meals are also served. It gets very busy (especially in summer), so either get there very early, or later, towards the end of the evening. The Pig Finca Café, in Kingsbridge (small, narrow entrance, opposite the tourist info centre) is a fun, more ‘funky’ place to eat (lunch & evening), it serves an unusual selection of Mediterranean/latin food, reasonable prices. Dartmouth and Salcombe also offer a wide variety of eating places and restaurants. Our local Chinese restaurants & take-aways/home delivery deliver to our cottages! The Cod Father in Kingsbridge sells reasonable fish and chips - you can usually phone your order in advance and then collect (but not in summer).
